Yeah, I wondered about net versus gross, and figured that the 20% wasn't really 20%. But I think if they really scammed the winner, and it's known publishing houses, wouldn't that bit of nastiness get around? I mean this is 2009 and they are using the Internet to publicize the contest.
As for the rejected by one, rejected by all. This is a contest and it's Tor U.K., not Tor. As a contest, since there is only a 1 in N chance of being selected, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot to dismiss (N-1) new writers from submitting a particular manuscript to them in the future.
