A Surprise For The Pleasant Peninsula

Priority Mail Stamps Dropped In Price

In January the USPS adjusted some of its rates, and in a surprise, the price for the Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope stamp dropped from $4.95 to $4.90. Over the years the USPS has had some wonderful iconic images for the Priority Mail stamps -- Air Force One, Mount Rushmore, California Redwoods, The White House, the X-15 rocket plane -- and I'm always interested to see where they're going next.

On to Michigan!

So today I needed to buy some stamps -- scored the last sheet they had of the 44ยข Distinguished Sailors -- and asked if they had the new Priority Mail stamps. They did. "So what is the picture this time?" I asked. Oooh! It's the Mackinac Bridge, which links the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet:

Compared to Wikipedia's picture:

Maybe they can keep this rate for a while. (grin)

Our office has one of those postal meters that automatically updates the rates over the phone lines whenever you buy more postage for it.

We had quite a discussion the day it suddenly started posting the $4.90 for priority, I think Denise went & checked the USPS web site to make sure the machine hadn't gone wonky when we weren't looking.

Yeah, the old $4.95 stamps are still the rate for the smaller Flat Rate Priority Mail boxes, but the Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelopes dropped, which surprised everyone, including the people at the Post Office last month. Go figure.

I remembered today to get some more Forever stamps, so that my SASE envelopes with submissions will survive the probable May price increase. (grin)

Huh, thought they weren't sticking us with a general increase this year. Guess they lied again. I'll have to lay in a fresh supply of the forever stamps. I'm about to deplete the ones I have sending missives to any and all political types.

Why? Telling them how stupid they are knowing about the funding problems for over a decade and STILL letting MARTA fail until it's too late to salvage, thus dragging our local economy even further into the dumper.

Grrrr...

I don't know that they ARE raising the rates. I just know that May is when they would. For me, the Forever stamps are a polite way of not costing people extra money. I know that some outfits have taken real hits with having to add postage on SASE's sent in weeks or months before.

So it's more "better safe than sorry" than actually knowing that the postal rates are going up.
