While You're Waiting For New Dr. Phil Stories

Oh This Is Interesting

On Saturday I got a letter from an editor which was pretty much a rewrite request. Yay! This story might finally be happening. Can't, or at least won't, give any details right now, but I am pleased. And all the comments are reasonable.

Meanwhile, we will still have to wait for early 2011 for my next publication to show up. But it's not like nothing is happening with my SF writing. (grin)

Meanwhile, Back In Australia

I was doing one of my period Google searches on myself when I ran across a webpage for back print issues of Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine. As you may recall, in 2009 I had two SF stories published Down Under: "Machine" appeared in ASIM Issue #38 and "In The Blink Of An Eye" appeared in ASIM Issue #39.

I am very proud of both stories -- plus "Machine" got an awesome illustration to boot, to say nothing of being inspired by a Pink Floyd song. But ASIM doesn't have a huge distribution, and while there was a brief period you could buy the issues as PDF downloads, while they still have copies in print, you might want to take this opportunity to snag a copy, read some Dr. Phil stories and support this marvelous SF co-op from Australia.

Andromeda Spaceways' Error -- You Might Benefit

Dear Andromeda Spaceways,

On 18 September 2009 I received not one, but two copies of ASIM #40. Now I received more than one copy of issues #38 and #39 because I had stories in those issues, so I received my subscription copies as well my contributor copies. But I do not have a story in issue #40.

If you are willing, I would take the extra copy of ASIM #40 and give it away to a good home via my LiveJournal blog -- http://dr-phil-physics.livejournal.com/ . Perhaps we can get someone else to subscribe -- I've certainly been pushing ASIM the last few months.

A Free Copy of Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine

So I have this extra copy of ASIM -- Australia's premier Science Fiction magazine -- and I'd like to give this Issue #40 to a good home. As I've mentioned before, anyone can subscribe to Andromeda Spaceways, either in print or as PDFs. I'm very fond of ASIM -- and I was fond of them long before they published two of my stories. (grin)

The Giveaway Rules

So the same people don't win all the time, I'm going to annoy my closest friends and request that this giveaway is NOT open to my extended SF/F family. That'd be (1) my actual family, (2) 2004 Clarion attendees, (3) WOTF XXIV winners, and (4) fellow members of the nefarious UCF. Also, (5) people who already get ASIM -- after all, the goal is to get a copy to someone who hasn't had a chance to get this Australian SF magazine before.

First person who requests in the comments in this posting and isn't a member of (1) to (5) above -- it's yours. Don't put your snail mail address in the posting -- no point in making it easy for the Nigerian Ministry of Oil people -- I'll let you know how to get an address to me. (grin)

And Yes...

... I do have a pile of books I promised in an earlier giveaway -- I haven't forgotten you. Really! I have all the mailers and just have to go back and find the emails and print the address labels.

Someday I have to remember I don't have a shipping department who does this stuff for me.

An Australian reader sent me an email about my story "In the Blink of an Eye" in the current issue of Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine.

I've just read In the Blink of an Eye in Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine and I wanted to let you know that I thought it was terrific. One of the best short stories I have come across in many years - excellent blend of storytelling and science. Also pleased to discover that Kalamazoo is a real place!

How nice. And how perceptive. (big-grin)

And I'm not trying to be mean here, but it fascinates me that someone from Australia thinks of Kalamazoo as a weird name which might not have been real. (happy-grin)

A Murder Mystery Where There Is No Body... Yet

    "So where’s the body?" Cooper asked as they got into the armored police cruiser. "I’d like to see it before you give me any case details."
    "We can’t show you."
    "You don’t have the body?"
    "No, sir. We have the body. We just can’t show you yet."
    "Detective -- you’re starting to annoy me."
    "Sorry, sir..."
    "And stop this sir crap. That’s equally annoying."
    "Sorry, Dr. Cooper."
    The other detective, Bates, finally spoke. "It’ll be much clearer at HQ than the crime scene, Dr. Cooper."
    "Just Cooper will do. We all work for the same side," Cooper said. "Now why can’t you show me the dead man?"
    "Because he’s not dead yet."
    Cooper nearly got angry. "Then how do you know with such certainty he’s going to be murdered?"
    "Because he’s sealed in a stasis tube -- along with the speeding bullet which is aimed directly towards his brain."
    Stan Cooper blinked twice without speaking.
    "And the murderer is your old pal, Seth Caputo."
    Now Cooper was interested.

Two Stories Coming

Just Got Word

Monday I got an e-mail with the edits for "In the Blink of an Eye" which was sold to Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine in Australia. This story was my second sale to ASIM and is now slated to appear in ASIM Issue #39 in January 2009.

Tuesday I got an e-mail saying that "Machine", my first sale to ASIM, will appear in ASIM Issue #38 November/December 2008. (Originally it had been slated for Issue #35, but they had to shuffle a couple of issues this year.)

Wow -- back-to-back issues!

There's Time

ASIM is a great little magazine. It's run as a co-op by a number of Australian SF writers, and though it doesn't pay pro rates, it does get well reviewed.

There's still time to get a subscription to Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine and start with Issue #38. (grin) For U.S. and other non-Australian readers, you can also buy PDFs of each issue, which of course don't include postage.

We'll let you know when the issues come out.
