At least four of my published stories have had illustrations -- all have been remarkable. At the WOTF XXIV workshop last August, I found out just how talented some of the up-and-coming artists are.

It's funny. I think of myself as a word-man, but an intrigueing illustration will often get my attention much more effectively than a good opening paragraph. Newspaper articles grab me the same way. Picture first, headlines second.

The WotF has a number of interesting story illustrations, though I'm kind of put off by the front illustrations they usually run. I find them far too grandiose for the actual stories, which often center on people on a smaller scale. The story illustrations match that much better most of the time.

For nice illustrations my current favorite magazine is Interzone. There's some eye candy there :-)

Actually, I've thought about this a lot. The WOTF cover illustration is about the contest, about the glory and grandeur of SF/F. Since the cover is assigned to a named artist long before the Gold Award story is selected, I imagine they didn't want to do an illo on one of the anthology stories.

So yeah, it's a marketing thing. Bright, bold, colorful -- and recognizable.

And the truth is that we do buy SF books by their covers. (grin) If you're just cruising the SF/F shelves at a bookstore, a really good cover can pique interest in a book, more than a title, perhaps less than the name of a Big Name Author you've heard of.
