I think the comparison with Princess Diana's death is dead on. I had forgotten about how her August 1997 death resulted in "all Diana all the time" media coverage. The Internet was still in it's ingancy then, so the online frenzy wasn't the equivalent, though.

I'm willing to bet that the funeral of Michael Jackson will have coverage similar to that of Princess Diana's, perhaps without a song for him that Elton John's revised "Candle In The Wind" was for her. I'm also willing to bet there will be conspiracy theories over Jackson's death as there has been over Diana's.
