What I can't understand are the explosions? My mom (on the extreme edge of the tremor zone) swears she heard two explosions, one just before the tremors and one almost as they stopped. She barely felt any movement, but the explosions were clear. And multiple people on the news reported explosions as well. One said it sounded like a house blew up. Yet the news mentioned no evidence of explosions beyond those reports.
I've spent much of the day searching online for a connection between explosions and earthquakes. There are a few pages that speculate about nuclear explosions causing earthquakes, but I think we would know if that happened here.
Is there some way in which a distant earthquake can cause phenomena that sound like explosions?
