Still Here

As I write this, still have two panels to go on Sunday. But I've taken a couple of pictures, so thought I'd post them while they're fresh. Getting to ConFusion was... slow. Though there wasn't much snow falling, the roads were slippery or greasy pretty much most of the way. Had to stop on the ramp from M-43 West Main Street onto US-131 south to get to I-94 -- and let a car which had spun out get turned around. Otherwise most people were behaving. But with speeds of 35-60mph, instead of 70mph the whole way, the trip took from 3:18pm to 7:55pm. By the time I'd checked in and gotten my badge, parked and had the bags taken upstairs, I'd missed the panel on "I Suck", by several Big Name and GoH authors, and the opening ceremonies. Both of which were said to be good.

Leaving campus, on my way. (Click on photo for larger.)

Doselle Young on the right, Tobias Buckell on the left, and others -- I needed a low-light photo to demonstrate Vibration Reduction at 1/8th of a second hand-held exposure for my Saturday talk. (grin) (Click on photo for larger.)

The hotel bar is where people hang out at cons. Alas, the refit underway last year is done, and the seats are all for skinny young things. (Click on photo for larger.)

Since I was doing a panel on digital photography, here's my audience at the start of the talk at 1pm. Of course I followed the Science GoH, who'd filled the room at Noon.

Actually, there were more people in Dennison I/II when I finished, than when I started -- so I took another picture. The talk went really well, though I had to stop several people from making too many comments in order to finish. (evil grin)

Steve Buchheit, Ferret Steinmetz, John Scalzi, etc. on a panel about the Undead -- Zombies and Vampires. The young man on the right is a student at GRCC, hoping to transfer to GVSU and has his first novel out -- met him on the writing panel the previous hour. Ferret and I had a joint reading session, which worked really well.

The Saturday night bar scene, which started late as the nice weather allowed a lot of people to go out to dinner. Jay Lake (center in the hat) jetted in from the other side of the country to come to Michigan in January -- a brave man! (Click on photo for larger.)

Steve Buchheit sitting and chatting while I had a turkey burger for dinner in the bar's upper level.

Clarion and WOTF friend Al Bogdan was wandering around shooting people in costume -- a friend of his won the contest.

I suspect there'll be another Dr. Phil at ConFusion picture coming from Al. (Click on photo for larger.)

It's Saturday night at ConFusion, cue the Pirate ship. A welcome diversion while they sorted out an audio problem in the Boardroom where they were showing Anime this year. I believe they were dancing to the music from Slumdog Millionaire. (Click on photo for larger.)

More tomorrow?

I Say This Every Year

ConFusion is one of the best run cons I've attended. The Troy Marriott has done a great job for years. Guest of Honor is Patrick Rothfuss, a great wild man I met at the WOTF XXIV workshop, Toastmaster is most excellent goblin & kick-ass princess author Jim C. Hines -- and author Jay Lake is making his way East as well.

West Michigan is in single digit temps tonight, but most of the icy roads are less so today. Hopefully heading east Friday afternoon (and west on Sunday) will be uneventful.

See you there?

Dr. Phil
dr_phil_physics: (seasons-best-kate)
Welcome to 2012!

At long last the somewhat crappy miserable year that was 2011 is done. Yay. Alas, New Year's Day as a single holiday has been ruined by the twin conspiracies of the calendar and greedy graspy capitalists. Once New Year's Day included a solid day of college bowl games, plus the Rose Parade, and the last several years an outdoors NHL hockey game. But 1 January 2012 is a Sunday, can't do that stuff until Monday.

Then everyone wanted their bowl game to be shown unopposed and they also created this worthless BCS Bowl Championship Series to create a mythical NCAA Division I "national champion", so the big bowl games are no longer on New Year's -- or January 2nd this year -- and the bowl games are spread out until MONDAY January 9th. Ridiculous!

Anyway, we welcomed in the New Year with the traditional eggnog -- and then I had some pickled herring. Mrs. Dr. Phil has given up on combining these two good luck foods from my family in one sitting. As I said the other day (DW), "My theory is after having hit your gut like a bomb, if that's the worst thing to happen in the new year -- it's good luck!"

Our NY/Sunday morning breakfast downstairs with Sam and the Sunday paper had two kinds of stollen, as did Christmas' breakfast (DW), though we added kumquats but moved the kielbasa to lunch. The last few years we've had Shrimp Sauterne for dinner, but this year we had a salmon and mushroom dish -- very yummy and more fish for luck! Oh, and Iron Chef tonight is also farm raised Atlantic salmon. (competitive grin)

The sabbatical is, I suppose, over. Classes begin Monday January 9th. I shall have to get serious about prep. And Epic ConFusion is in like three weeks -- 20-22 January 2012 -- and I have to blog about my panels. So I suppose I have to get busy. So much for vacation days... (grin)

Happy New Year, good friends. May you have a good year even if you didn't scarf down fish. Buckle your seatbelt and make sure your seat is in the upright and locked position. The year is off to a start.

Maybe I'll give a quiz at my 1pm class on Friday and let them go early so I can get on the road. (grin) It's not really cheating -- twice weekly quizzes are due/handed out on Tuesdays and Fridays. They're usually take-home quizzes, but don't have to be. (double-jeopardy-grin)

Been Pretty Quiet Lately

I do promise to do better. Besides being insanely busy with the end of the semester coming, I've not done a lot of typing lately as I had to deal with an infection on my thumb. Oh, you say, who needs a thumb to type? Well, when it was hurting, leaning it against even a wrist pad hurt. And on the laptop, the bandages kept sliding on the mouse touchpad, which randomly moved the cursor, resulting in unusable typing. (grin)

And then I've had trouble with a compressed nerve and cancelled all my plans for Fall 2010 SF cons, which kept me out of circulation for a bit.

So I hope to get some updates done Real Soon Now.

ConFusion 2011 -- 21-23 January 2011, Troy Marriott, Troy MI

For years I've been going to ConFusion on the other side of the state. Not only do I have fond memories of my first SF con, but I really lucked out making my first SF con a good one. ConFusion is one of the better run regional cons I've run across. And with a good list of GoHs, including an awesome real science track, there are lots of authors and publishing people who show up. Also quite a number of Canadians come across the border as well.

Speaking of Guests of Honor, the 2011 ConFusion lineup runs as:
* Pro: Paolo Bacigalupi
* Pro: Cherie Priest
* Science: Aubrey de Grey
* Fan: Lisa Garrison-Ragsdale
* Special: Peter V. Brett
* Featured: Tom Smith

Last year I was on six panels and a reading. So naturally I've been working with the Programming people and while I don't have my assignments yet, it looks pretty good that I'll have lots of panels to be on for 2011.

What's really interesting for me is that as a Physics professor at Western Michigan University, I was invited to do a talk on the science track. Ooh, yes please! I'll let y'all know when I know more about my scheduling, but I've got a couple of good things in mind.

So I Should Probably Go Ahead and Register

Yesterday I took a couple of minutes before I had to leave and did my con registration and hotel. The Troy Marriott is a very nice facility and they seem happy to get ConFused every year.

I was surprised when I got the number "51" on my registration. Last year I registered in November and got a number near 100, unless my mind is paying tricks on me. Assuming that my badge number is 51, that should be the lowest number I've ever gotten for ConFusion. Of course that also makes me worry that the pre-registration numbers are down from last year. While that may be in part due to an earlier glitch in the online registration system, COME ON AND REGISTER, GUYS. (grin)

Seriously -- if you're in Michigan and the surrounding areas, you should try to come to ConFusion. Driving to the Detroit suburbs in January isn't totally crazy -- should I mention the year of the blizzard when a lot of us stayed an extra night (evil grin) -- and what else is there to do in January?

And As An Added Bonus...

I am planning on finishing my zombie murder mystery story over Christmas break and hope to have a reading of it at ConFusion. Now you would't want to miss that, would you?

I didn't think so. (triple-word-score-grin)

A Good Time Had By All

ConFusion 2010 is History now.

Will post of my adventures Real Soon Now. Have to get my rest early tonight, because I'll be driving in snow and dropping temps tomorrow. (grin) Pretty much only did my 6 panels and my reading, plus finishing the story I was going to read. (double-grin) But really, that was quite a lot.

Troy Marriott, Troy MI

General reminder that this weekend is ConFusion on the other end of the state from West Michigan. You can get more info via my post about my Six Panels and A Reading at ConFusion here.

Getting There Is By No Means Half The Fun

I mean, who wants to drive I-94 in Michigan, even if you can switch over to I-69 in Battle Creek and I-96 in Lansing? Thankfully, the weather looks to cooperate, at least on the trek eastward. My second class ends at 3pm. As soon as I can, I'll hit the road, getting off the overly used I-94 before rush hour formally begins. But times vary. Not sure if I can make it to Troy, fight the last few miles of heavy Detroit traffic to I-75 and then up to Big Beaver Road -- yes, that's its name, no snickering you in the back row -- check in and grab my con badge in time to hear Cat Valente's reading at 7pm. But that's how things go.

Good news is that the big western storms that dumped so much snow in the Californian mountains will be reduced to rain on Sunday, high around 42°F. So that when I leave ConFusion between 1-2pm, I at least won't have to deal with ice and snow.

If You're In The Area

This is a really nice regional con and it attracts lots of writers, editors, artists, fans of all flavors -- and it is well run and the hotel really likes hosting ConFusion. Can't always say that about hotels. (grin)

So come on over if you've got a chance. It'll be fun.

There's a meme wandering around Facebook about posting pictures from when you were younger. This is a picture from 1983 in Champaign IL taken of the Not-Yet-Dr. Phil by the Not-Yet-Mrs. Dr. Phil, contrasting with a picture from the January 2009 ConFusion:

This is the first of my two Nikon F3 cameras, as noted by the red dot on the cover to the flash synch -- the second one had a bright blue dot. The picture was taken with a Nikon Nikkormat FT3, which had a yellow dot. (grin)

ConFusion 2010, "I See By My ConFusion", is coming up and they've got a schedule up online. And Dr. Phil is scheduled to do a mess of panels (six) on Saturday and a reading on Sunday.
Sci-Fi Television
Diane Frkan, Dr. Philip Kaldon, Ed Gardiner

* Saturday 10:00a - 11:00a

It's another season of network programming! What happened to Heroes? Sara Connor and Dollhouse dumped, sexy Vampires, the "Visitors" and the Prisoner have arrived and LOST! A discussion panel on the new, returning and revamped shows that fall under the sci-fi, supernatural and other cross-over genre

NOTE: This panel is a hybrid of a TV panel and one Dr. Phil proposed on Why All The Remakes? Alas, it's at the same time as another panel I'd proposed on the Rate Fail debate, with some of the people who blogged on the issue. (grin) But the TV panel needed another body, so Dr. Phil is taking one for the team and will miss the Rate Fail fun. (double-grin)

Rate Fail: Does it matter how much writers get paid for short fiction?

* Saturday 10:00a - 11:00a
* Dennison 3&4

A new market offers genre writers one-fifth of a cent per word, but considers it okay because it's the exposure that counts. Yet this is less than the pulps paid eighty years ago, even unadjusted for inflation. Minimum SFWA pro rates are 5 cents a word, and even that isn't a lot of money. Exposure versus payment? For The Luv versus Business? Does money equal quality? Authors discuss differing views on these questions.

Come On Over

The Troy Marriott has been a fabulous host hotel for ConFusion the last several years. They have an excellent Don Shula's Steakhouse -- and the bar serves some serious burgers and meals, too. And ConFusion itself is a very well run SF/F con, and its proximity to the Canadian border makes it an attractive con for Canadians to come. Lots of top flight authors and a number of editors and publishers make it a point to come as well. Always some good programs and panels for new writers. And the anime and film rooms are a lot of fun.

All in all, one of my favorite regional cons -- all kinds of great people come out in mid-January near Detroit every year, so you know it's got to be good. (grin)

So Yesterday Was A Silver Anniversary

Yeah, me and Mrs. Dr. Phil had a lovely wedding ceremony in Bond Chapel on the campus of the University of Chicago twenty-five years ago on 27 October. So naturally I didn't go straight home last night after Exam 2, but went off to Schuler's Books and Music on Alpine Avenue for a quick bite to eat, and then a reading and book signing by Jim C. Hines.

What? Don't look at me like that. (a) The 27 October 1984 was our second wedding ceremony. The first was back on 12 January 1984, where we got married before a Cook County (Illinois) judge who didn't see us***, in the midst of moving to the U.P. (2) We've got another GVSU special wine pairings dinner scheduled for 12 November with a wonderful menu, so we'll celebrate just fine thank you. (III) Hey, Mrs. Dr. Phil got a signed book out of the deal.

Second Exam

I was pretty worried about that Exam 2 in my PHYS-1060 Stars and Galaxies class. So many people were down with the flu. But they came through. 115 out of 124 people showed up for the exam, and just about all of the 9 who didn't managed to drop me a line or a phone call. So I think it worked out all right. Chose not to hold class after the exam, and made it 50 instead of 30 multiple guess questions. Managed to finish well before the end of the class time, get the tests boxed up for the grad student to run to the Scantron center. And I made it to Schuler's by 6:02pm, and by 6:28 I'd hit the bathroom, bought five copies of Jim's new book to sign, and had just been served my salad and half roast beef with horseradish sauce sandwich on French bread.

And Then Much Madness Pursues

Jim C. Hines is a Michigan author whom I've known from cons and the web for a couple of years. We've been on some panels together and he's a WOTF winner and author of a series of Goblin books and now kick-ass Princess books. The Stepsister Scheme was launched at ConFusion in January and now it was time for the second adventure, The Mermaid's Madness.

He's also a charming speaking and great teller of tales. Rather than read from the new book, he chose instead to read from his Muppet-inspired werewolf story, The Creature in Your Neighborhood from the anthology Strip Mauled. It's written as a TV script and Jim did a lovely job of voicing the different memorable characters and provide some sound effects, including deleting certain words not suitable for children's hearing using a squeaky toy. A Mr. Happy Fun Ball, I think he said it was. (grin)

There were perhaps a dozen people in attendance, though most were Jim's family and friends from the Grand Rapids area. Even at that it was quite a successful event, plus Jim's books got some nice featuring in the front of the store and in their monthly news flier.

Jim's note for the future: Yes, it is a good idea to bring more books with you to make sure the bookstore has books to sell. But if you have a series, don't bring the same amount of each. Bring LOTS more of Book One. Because you won't sell the later books in a series if the first one isn't there. (wise grin)

I love Jim's clever and funny writing style. Go buy his books. And if you are at WindyCon 36 in mid-November, you could meet Jim C. Hines there as well.

The Darling of Hollywood

At the Oscars the other week the surprise hit Slumdog Millionaire took a whole lot of honors, outside of the acting awards. Mrs. Dr. Phil had seen the movie in Holland MI when I was off to ConFusion in Troy MI back in January. Now this weekend Mrs. Dr. Phil is the one off at a conference/workshop and so on the way back from the airport, I swung by Celebration Cinema South at the M-6 freeway and Kalamazoo Avenue -- the one local Jack Loeks theatre we've never been to yet -- and caught up.

Actually, I hadn't made up my mind until the drive out to the airport. It was such a beautiful blue sky day, that spending a couple of hours inside a dark movie theatre seemed the perfect thing to do. (grin) Unfortunately, I'd misremembered the times at the various theatres, and so I was there at 1:30, but the movie wouldn't start for at least 45 minutes. Fortunately, I could just wander back to the Bravada and listen to the rest of Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, the NPR news quiz show.

Slumdog Millionaire [R]
Celebration South #13, 2:15pm, $6.50

The mini review in the GRPress started off by describing this movie as "gritty." Oh yes, and more. And yet, it manages to be both a charming love story and triumphant, while honestly earning its R-rating, for all those things which are neither charming nor triumphant.

This is not a picture that could've been made in the U.S. While I'm sure that most Americans don't realize that Who Wants To Be A Millionaire had it origins "somewhere else", i.e. Britain, the real shock is not that this is the Indian version of the game show, or that the top prize is 20,000,000 rupees. It's that our characters come out of a childhood that can only, from my priviledged background, be described as a Third World nightmare. And coupled with an adult world of corruption and brutality which is also, I hope, not part of the American experience. And yet...

The story is told in flashbacks leading up to the top question of the game show, the comforting four-answer multiple choice interrogation of WWTBAM and the unexpected police interrogation. The performances of the children is outstanding and the diversity of locations and conditions, with many physical dangers, along with numerous plot twists, makes it a complicated woven tapestry. And since we want our main character to win, it is easy to buy into both the gritty realism and the fairy tale.

What makes the movie endearing is that two of the three children we're following manage to grow up relatively intact, educated -- and stay nice, despite all that happens to them. Mrs. Dr. Phil describes this as the fairy tale aspect of the movie. Sure, but I think it's important to the movie and its success that this is so. Because I could imagine a darker version where Jamal was raised as a con man, in which his sincere look and professed innocence is fake -- and the ending would be much like the ending to The Usual Suspects, where you cannot believe anything which has happened earlier.

In any event, Slumdog Millionaire isn't quite what you might've thought it would be. And that is a very good thing.

Do stay for the credits, because they do a lovely Bollywood production number on the train platforms.
Highly Recommended
