Ooh!

Lookie here! A total lunar eclipse... at dawn! Just before the sun comes up in the east, the moon will already be in total eclipse in the west. 6:37am is like the max. Cool, since I get up at 6:17am, I can get up off the futon on the floor and peer out the window.

And see nothing.

The Weather Gods Mock Astronomical Events In West Michigan

It's clear in the east. Clouded in off to the west. Oh, naturally. Dammit -- and the moon was so bright and clear when I went to bed at 3:30am! How can Nature screw up a lunar eclipse viewing in three bloody hours? Because it's West Michigan, darling. We nearly always miss the lunar eclipses.

Sigh.

At least it wasn't like I'd brought a whole class of astronomy students out to a 6am viewing and found it to be a bust. But it would've been cool to see.

My complex faces east and is built on a hill, and of course I'm on the east side, which is the lower level. It was clear enough I should have been able to see it here in Atlanta, if only I'd moved the trees, the high tension poles, more trees, 4 buildings and more trees...

However, most of the local early morning shows did show nice shots taken from their traffic helicopters!

See -- traffic helicopters have a use even for people who don't have cars. (grin)
