An Optical Illusion Of The First Rank

Check out this from The Bad Astronomy Blog. I'll wait.

Mind you I'm at Chevy getting some work done on the 1996 teal Blazer, so I'm using SUMMER, the tiny Fujitsu U810 UMPC and the colors are still vividly green and blue. Very impressive.

Stupid human mind, falls for these tricks every time.

Yes it does. And for even more stuff that we just never notice.

And then you get into why ink on paper is easier to read than glowing phosphors (and it's not just brain training). You can work around it with a little with retraining, but it's how the eyes work and then how the brain interprets the signals. And then there is the innate scan rate (which varies from individual to individual and species to species). It's an amazing thing what we call "vision."

Wow. I didn't believe you until I Photoshopped it myself. I am going to send the link to my husband and ask what he sees. He's a bit red-green colorblind...

Isn't it neat? Even the enlarged views are still subjective. My parents aren't on the Web -- they don't have a computer. But I did buy them a Presto/HP A10 Printing Mailbox (http://dr-phil-physics.livejournal.com/132073.html) --an email service with a dedicated HP inkjet printer -- and so I sent them my blog, plus the article on The Bad Astronomy blog. The color inkjet should still show it. I'l find out this weekend. (grin)
