Yet Another Milestone

Yesterday, Saturday 20 March 2010, I shipped my 300th submission to any market. Like my 200th submission, this was to Writers of the Future -- I believe my 32nd submission to that contest. Still have a little eligibility left. 62 completed stories sent out 300 times, with 14 publications and one more pending. Not bad for not even eight years of sending things out, if I do say so myself.

It took 1427 days after 9 June 2002 to get to the first hundred submissions on 6 May 2006, 725 days for my second hundred on 30 April 2008 and 689 days to the third hundred. #301 is already shipped and #302 should go out sometime in the next few days.

Hopefully I'll be able to do some more work on novels as well this year -- perhaps work on getting an agent. (double-grin)

When I started submitting, I'd already read several authors I was familiar with saying that they needed like 600 rejections to really start their careers. That was important knowledge to have to go into this with eyes wide open. That the time for each successive 100 subs is getting shorter is partly a function of knowing more markets and partly having more stories to sub -- but also I have the procedures down and when something is ready to go, I can get it up and out in a relatively short amount of time.

On to the next one! And thanks!

Hurray! Congrats on the 300. I'm glad to see you have more survivors than the Spartans at Thermopylae :-)

Thanks -- I just knew someone was going to do a 300 reference, especially since it was on TBS last night. (grin) Thing is, the Greeks won that war. So like all my rejections, I am willing to sacrifice now in order to secure the victory later. (double-grin)

Heh, I can't even watch TV in the US :-) But I took a degree in Latin and (ancient) history, so I was honestly thinking about Herodotus. My inner nerd strikes again :-)

Forgot to say: That sounds like a winning strategy :-) (and much better than Phyrric victories *g*).

Congrats on the milestone!

I like the idea that you're close to agent hunting as well. Hope this is the year of the novels.

Would've started the agent search already except the novel I finished last year needs a couple of fixes, and I haven't had a chance to sit down and do the things I have on the list I did over New Year's. (grin)

That is impressive, Congrats!

Equally impressive is your system of tracking/analyzing your data. All I have is a folder of my rejections & acceptances--one virtual, one physical.

I cannot wait to read your novel! Good luck finishing up the rewrites.
