Tangent Online has published a review of my short story "The Pulse of the Sea" along with the other contributions to last September's Northwest Passages: A Cascadian Anthology from Windstorm Creative.

Aimee Poynter writes:
“The Pulse of the Sea” by Dr. Philip Edward Kaldon opens with Cari waking in a hospital and told that she has been in a terrible train accident from which she suffered multiple serious injuries. The doctor reassures her that she will be rebuilt using machines.

Cari’s body is put back together and her heart is replaced with a mechanical one that does not beat, so she has no pulse. Not only must she deal with the deaths of her parents and brother, but also that she is fundamentally different from nearly every other person she meets.

“The Pulse of the Sea” is a sensitive tale of death and rebirth that examines how humans connect with each other. A beautiful tale, very well done.

Of course she ruins her review by declaring in the next sentence that the next is her favorite story in the collection. (grin)

But I'd say this is pretty good for A Very First Published Review and I think Ms. Poynter "got it." (double-grin)

And thanks to Tangent Online watcher and 2004 Clarion friend Eric for letting "us" know. Eric is getting to be quite a good literary SF/F/H reviewer himself -- I'm not sure I'd fare as nicely under his tender mercies. (three-point-hoop-shot-grin)

Thanks, Andy. I was quite surprised to see Eric's reference to this. The anthology came out in the beginning of September at CascadiaCon/NASFiC, and I thought it might be reviewed/commented upon by people who'd been at the conference. By mid-March 2006, I figured the window was closed for seeing reviews in print for the anthology... but I was wrong. Guess I failed to consider that it is an anthology and the Tangent Online review covered all the stories, so it would take time to develop.

Anyway, it really is a very nice review!

Well, Dr. Phil, I was searching to see if I could find this book online for less than $20, I'm still a broke college student and found this consumer review on Amazon.

My personal favorites (in the order they appear in the book) are: Donna McMahon's "Feeding the Eagles," Mary E. Lowd's "Forget Me Not," Dr. Philip Edward Kaldon's "The Pulse of the Sea," Ruth Nestvold's "A Debt to Collect," Mercurio D. Rivera's "Rewind, Reply," Jacques L. Condor's "Them," John Kratman's "Nanuq," Krista Dietrich's "Sister's Story," and Eric Choi's "Plot Device."

So you hit a personal favorite of the one person that decided to do an Amazon review. Congratulations.

Hey, Matt!

Did you find it cheaper than $20? Can't remember if it's cheaper on the publisher's website -- I'm on a PDA right now and can't repond here and check another webpage in Pocket Internet Explorer at the same time.

It's $19.99 at Amazon.com, but qualifies for free shipping if you get the total over $25.

This is a nice collection -- they got a LOT of entries and so they were able to pick some good ones. I happen to like my own story a lot, but I'm biased. If all you want to do is buy Dr. Phil's first pro sale SF short story, it's up to you if you want to spend the money. But if you want a nice anthology, it's a nice anthology -- and it has a Dr. Phil story.
