Yesterday

... morning it was 12degF. Then it warmed up into the mid-40s. And the foot of snow that we'd gotten at our house began to melt, especially when it began to rain. I began to envision that our driveway would become one big slick shiny rail of ice.

Last Night

... the rains continued, as did gusty winds. The driveway was sloppy, but the temperature stayed in the 40s all night, so the melting had plenty of time to work. At 3:33am I woke up when the humidifier stopped and the UPS next to me hooked up to the clock and the network stuff beeped -- but only for a long second. Never got serious enough for the backup generator to switch on.

Today

... the temp in the 40s continued. You can see the sand and gravel in the driveway, except in the semi-flooded low spot, and the melting should continue all day. They were talking about partial sun, but other than seeing a bright spot of murk peeking out as I headed south out of Grand Rapids, it hasn't done so down here in K-zoo. Kalamazoo had less snow than we did and it is rapidly going away. More rain this afternoon.

But Then

... sometime tonight a cold front is going to come through with temperatures dropping down to 15degF, and perhaps 3-5" of snow. Oh and winds gusting to 50 mph. Now if we get enough melting, the wind may dry the pavement and parts of our driveway, and this thaw will be fairly complete. Otherwise it's going to ice up and tomorrow will be a skating rink.

I am sure that there will be those who will be happy to see January rid of in West Michigan -- they tend to forget that in Michigan, February is the longest month. (grin) And extra special long this leap year. (double-fun-grin)

you weren't in the Syracuse area about a week ago...I had a really good laugh watching them dig out of a 2-plus foot snowfall like we did when we were kids...looked so familiar!

And then a friend of mine is in Cleveland checking up on his 89/90 year-old grandparents, nice 30-something southern boy. He told me last night he's seen more snow, in this case lake-effect snow, in the last 5 days than he's seen in his whole life...and he was here in '93 when we had that blizzard, excuse me, land-based hurricane low, that dumped over 2 feet on the whole southeastern half of the country!!

btw, Atlanta's weather community got real excited a couple of weeks ago, we had two "winter weather" situations with in a 5 day period. Just like little kids, even the head weather gurus for the stations came in during the weekend one. And we got lucky and dodged the black-ice bullet when after a day of rain, sleet and then snow, the wind came in before the temperatures dropped into the 20's.

Roads are already listed as "treacherous". The wind is gusting, snow is horizontal, most of the windows are blocked with blowing snow, temp is already below 19degF -- it was still 44degF at 5pm.

"Breaking News: All drivers to avoid I-94 from the Indiana/Michigan line to Calhoun County..." on TV right now...

I fully expect that we'll put some more hours on the backup generator tonight. And I've put the following notice on my class web page already:

NOTICE:

BLIZZARD Conditions Wed 30 January 2008
In addition to the 30° drop in temperature, we
are under a Blizzard Warning, with 3-5" of snow,
plus icing, plus 50 mph gusts of wind.
Dr. Phil doesn't yet know what the road or snow
conditions will be Wednesday morning.

Our driveway was almost nearly clear tonight. Keyword is "was".

Huh... just lost Channel 3 on the cable for a moment. Fun times tonight!
